Subsurface Moisture Intrusion Through Concrete Slab Subflooring

Wood flooring warping? Carpet always damp and smelling of mildew? In the process of repair - replace with tile or stone so slight moisture in the future will not cause any problems.

Step One: (Verify process with your contractor)

Remove all existing wood and carpet flooring. Do not remove hard surface flooring. The tile, stone, etc. flooring can be sealed to reduce water vapor entry and stop efflorescence. See other "Problem Solving" pages for details.

Next:

Apply a vapor barrier to the slab. This is usually a plastic sheeting.

Next:

Apply cementacious "backer board" over the vapor barrier.

Next:

Install tile or stone of your choice. See "Surface Types" section for the pros and cons of all the choices.
